It’s not that the School of Medicine’s sports-medicine physician didn’t want to serve his country or the dedicated men and women whose dreams are for Olympic glory. It’s just that the timing for this Guy couldn’t have been worse.
The eyes of the world may be on the Olympics, but closer to home, it’s football season!
“When the U.S. Olympic Committee first called, they asked if I could come to Beijing for two-and-a-half weeks,” said Guy, the head team physician for football. “What an honor, I thought. But there was no way I could go. It’s right smack in the middle of football season. How could I leave the Gamecocks? I had to say, ‘No.’ ”
He put the offer out of his mind until the committee called back with another: Could he be in Beijing for 10 days? The opportunity was more manageable, Guy said, and he presented the request to Coach Steve Spurrier and all other pertinent parties.
“Coach Spurrier was extremely enthusiastic, and so was (athletic director) Eric Hyman. The university was very supportive,” said Guy, who has traveled to Europe but never to China. “This is a highlight of my career.”
