USC Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Celebration

Columbia, SC - USC Sports Medicine recently hosted the 4thAnnual Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Celebration at Williams-Brice Stadium’s Crews Building.  The group of over 130 physicians, staff, undergraduate athletic training students, graduate athletic training students and parents attended the event. This year’s keynote speaker was Larry Durstine, PhD, Chairperson to the University of South Carolina's Exercise Science Department.

This event is a celebration of the past year.  Jim Mensch, PhD, Director of Athletic Training Education, took a few minutes to discuss several exciting moments that happened this past year.  Research is a very important component at USC.  The education staff and students received close to $1.2 million in research grants.  The athletic training program had 5 manuscripts published in national journals and 29 different individuals presented at national, district and state conferences.  The students of the program also received several prestigious awards ranging from scholarships to internships in the NFL and Professional Baseball.

Each year, the College of Education gives two awards to their undergraduate students.  This year, Josh Pratt received the Scotteye Hedstrom Scholarship and Tim Vigue received the Outstanding Athletic Training Student award.  The students both received plaques to recognize their achievement.  The University of South Carolina also awarded the prestigious USC Magellan Scholarship to Amanda Hawkins and Dillon Smith, both undergraduate athletic training students.

This event is an annual celebration of accomplishments in Sports Medicine at the University of South Carolina.
