The Spot Light of the month is Josh Ortegon, owner operator of Athletes Arena. Josh is the premier sports performance specialist in the Columbia area. His clientele ranges from weekend warriors to top collegiate athletes. Josh has trained over 70 high school athletes who have gone on to compete at the college level from SEC, ACC, and Big 10 schools to D-1AA and D-2 programs covering over 35 colleges.
Josh graduated from Western Michigan University in 2000 with a degree in Exercise Physiology. He has completed his certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) which is offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The CSCS certification is the highest level of personal training certification a person can earn. Josh also completed the Strength and Conditioning Internship Program at the prestigious IMG Academies. He has been instrumental in the community in consulting parents and young athletes on proper exercise progression, programming to decrease their individual chances of sport-specific injury, and long-term performance enhancement programming for youth athletes.
Since its inception in 2005, Athlete's Arena has provided personal training and sports performance enhancement at their training facility in Irmo, South Carolina. It features an indoor 2000 sq. ft turf area that allows for specialized drills, fully equipped training area with custom built and prototype equipment, and a recovery area that includes private massage and locker rooms. Other services that Athletes Arena offers are pre-participation assessment for injured athletes prior to training, sports nutrition counseling, and static and dynamic posture assessments.
Athlete's Arena has also been sought out to organize and implement high performance training programs for local professional athletes and Olympic competitors. Along with High Performance, Athlete's Arena has begun researching and developing Return-To-Play programs designed to bridge the gap between Physical Therapy and functionality to prepare the athlete to return to the level of performance prior to injury.
