Biography

Angus McBryde Jr., FACS, received his MD from Duke University in 1963.  An internship (voted best intern) and junior assistant residency followed at the University of Pennsylvania.  He served 2 years in the U.S. Navy, including a year in Vietnam.  After a Duke Orthopaedic Residency, during which he chaired the AOA Residents Conference and coined the term “floating knee”, he practiced in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1971 to 1991.  During these years, he was Attending Physician for the orthopaedic residency program at Carolinas Medical Center.  From 1977—1979, he was medical director of The North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital (NCOH) in Gastonia, North Carolina.

His interests are primarily competitive and recreational sports and fitness injuries.  He has presented internationally and has numerous publications including peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and a history of NCOH, Instructional Course, and Academy DVD contributions.  A lifetime fitness enthusiast, he has been an awardee at numerous marathons and road races.

Dr. McBryde served as team physician at the National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1983, the World Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in 1987, the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, in 1988 (lead physician for Track and Field), and in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was Chairman of the North Carolina Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness from 1989-1991 and received the prestigious North Carolina “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” from Governor Jim Martin.
In 1991, he moved to the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, to become Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery succeeding Lewis Anderson, himself a later Distinguished Southern Orthopedist.

In 1996, he was recruited to a similar position at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina.  He was Founding Editor for the MUSC Orthopaedic Journal, now a respected publication.

In 2000 as Professor, he moved to the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine (USC), Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Columbia, South Carolina, to join the USC faculty as Professor.  As USC Sports Medicine Director, he initiated and developed sports coverage for the university and surrounding areas.

In 2005, he was invited to join the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center (ASMOC) in Birmingham, Alabama, in practice.  This included direction of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) Ankle and Foot fellowship with the global associated leg, ankle and foot sports medicine responsibilities for numerous multilevel and professional athletes.

Dr. McBryde, in late 2011, was asked to rejoin the University of South Carolina academic faculty and to direct the leg, ankle and foot services.  He continues his practice in ankle and foot surgery with a sports medicine bent.  His ankle and foot sports medicine special interests have included posterior ankle impingement, great toe sesamoids, running injuries and compartment syndrome.

Dr. McBryde is married to another Durham native, Kay Kirkpatrick McBryde, with 8 now-grown children and 19 grandchildren, two of whom are physicians.
